About SCIL
SCIL: The journey so far
The Company was formed in 2001 to purchase and own the property known as The Hub Hornby. The original Board identified that the previous declining and fragmented Mall was strategically placed within an area of Christchurch that had significant growth potential. The area had demographic advantages including a diverse mix of socio-economic groups adjacent to major arterial routes, direct access to the International Airport and an expanding industrial and retail infrastructure.
Since the property was purchased ongoing development works have resulted in The Hub Hornby being recognised as a shopping mall of significance within the Christchurch area. Since the commencement of the development, surrounding retailers have also opened up in the vicinity. It would not be unfair to say that within a one-kilometre radius there would not be a greater concentration of diverse retail offerings for the Christchurch customer.
The company is owned by a wide range of local investors. The Board is characterised by being comprised of all local Christchurch residents.
The Company has been fortunate in having two major anchor tenants the Pak N Save supermarket and a “Farmer’s” store which is identified as a “Premier Store” in terms of presentation and fit-out. Due to The Hub carrying out a continuing term of construction and development since 2001 and being able to attract fit-outs of a high standard, the first impression is that of freshness and innovation, one case in point being the generally acclaimed Food Court.
These advances have been vindicated by the receipt of such admirable awards as The National Property Council Award of Excellence, Best in Retail Category for Retail Construction and the recent environmental gold standard award which gives us the authority to bear the prestigious Enviromark Toitu logo. The judging criteria for the Property award included “economic and financial factors, project innovation and design, design and construction, owner and user satisfaction, and sustainability / efficiency of operation”.
Due to the local ownership, the centre has a very strong community focus and this is highlighted by its involvement in local charities and the presentation of interesting themes such as the Fashion Show identified by the direct participation of tenants and staff as models and the ever-popular “Pet’s Night”. A point of note is the culturally significant exterior artworks that confirm our sense of identity and partnership with the local community.
